ELAI Student Competition 2022
The Employment Law Association of Ireland (ELAI) is pleased to announce a student essay and video competition in 2022 to encourage students’ interests in the area of employment law. There will be four prizes available as part of the competition:
- a prize for best essay;
- a prize for best video;
- a prize for highly commended video; and
- a prize for highly commended essay.
The winners of the best video and best essay category will receive a prize of €750 each towards their ongoing studies. The winners of the highly commended video and essay category will receive a prize of €300 each towards their ongoing studies. All four winners will enjoy one year’s free membership of ELAI (from May 2022 to May 2023), which includes free access to ELAI seminars throughout 2022.
How can I enter the competition?
Students entering the competition will be required to submit either an essay or a video on the following topic:
‘How should employment law change to ensure flexible working and the right to disconnect in a talent driven market’
Rules of the Competition
- Students can only submit an essay or a video, they cannot enter under both categories
- Essay entries must not exceed 2,000 word including any footnotes. No essay longer than 2,000 words will be considered by the ELAI judging panel
- Video entries must not be longer than 15 minutes and must be a minimum of 12 minutes and can include slides and other images, but the entrant must also include some video of themselves presenting their submission
- The competition is open to any undergraduate or post graduate student including Ph.D. researcher, registered for study during the academic year 2021/2022 at a third level institution in Ireland, including Northern Ireland. It is also open to students undertaking a professional course with the Law Society of Ireland or Northern Ireland or King’s Inns and any pupil barrister in their first year of pupillage. A decision on eligibility of each entrant can be taken by ELAI in its absolute discretion
- Entries must be individually authored and only one entry per person is allowed
- Entries must be the original work of the entrant and may be checked for plagiarism. Any entry that is found to be plagiarised will be automatically disqualified
- All entries must be in English
- Essay entries should be presented in MS word format, size 12 font and 1.5 spacing
- The entry cannot have been submitted to another competition or for publication in any journal or other publication

- The cover email submitting the entry should include the following:
- The entrant’s full name
- The entrant’s postal address and email address
- The entrant’s course of study and the name and address of the educational institution
- The word count of the essay (including footnotes) or length of the video
Judging
- The competition will be judged by a panel of ELAI members appointed by the ELAI Committee. The panel’s decision will be final
- At the discretion of ELAI, preliminary shortlisting may apply in advance of the panel's deliberations
- ELAI will acknowledge receipt of entries but will not give feedback on entries or engage in further correspondence with entrants except to confirm to the two winning entrants that they have been successful
- ELAI reserves the right not to award the prizes if it feels the standards of entries does not justify an award
- The winning entries will be published on ELAI’s website and shared on ELAI’s social networking accounts
Key dates and submission information
The competition opens on 24 January 2022 and the deadline for submission of entries will be 5pm on 1 March 2022. Winners will be announced at the 2022 ELAI AGM in May.
